Openspiral is the home of Chicago-based interactive designer, Ethan Smith. For over a decade he has been practicing interactive design and user experience for a collection of agencies and consulting clients (both big and small) in California, New York and Chicago.
In addition to his freelance and agency track record, Ethan has served as a digital design faculty member for colleges in both the public and for-profit sectors teaching design and digital imaging to students in both undergraduate and professional education settings.
His body of work includes work for clients such as Kohler, 3M, Xerox, MasterCard, Weber-Stephen Products, Fox Searchlight Studios, Custo Barcelona, Brightstar Corporation, Frette, Bonobos, Schoolhouse Electric Co., Stanley Furniture, Genesco Brands, Shure Incorporated, Outdoor Research and prAna.
His work has appeared in the Communication Arts Interactive Annual, Webby Awards and the HOW Interactive Design Awards – among many others. He is a long standing member of AIGA, the Interaction Design Association, as well as an associate member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
Ethan holds an MA in multimedia as well as bachelors degrees in both visual arts and music. His current interest lies in applying human-centered methodologies to interactive media.
His current post is Managing Creative Director at Gorilla, an E-commerce agency headquartered in Chicago.
